Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows.
BUCK BRANNAMAN was the basis for the character Tom Booker, the central figure in Nicholas Evans' best-selling novel The Horse Whisperer and the film version, directed by Robert Redford. In the motion picture, Redford stars as Booker, the cowboy who heals a fear-crazed horse along with the mother and daughter who bring the animal to him. Buck’s work with horses, as it turns out, also served to rescue him from a troubled past. Brannaman himself was an abused child: the compassion and empathy he has brought to training horses has helped him deal with a history of conflict and violence.
JOE CAMP and Benji believes that the human spirit can still rise above the doom and gloom into which it seems so often born. The unknown, the uncelebrated can still mount a white horse, charge off into the distance and accomplish things worthwhile, and hold his or her head high in the process. His are presentations of promise for all who battle the odds for things held dear and, perhaps, surrender too quickly to those indolent, oft-spoken assurances: You can't do that! That's impossible! Give up! Quit! Sit down! Shut up! Go away! Joe is a passionate and inspirational speaker. His down home manner, infectious wit, and stirring delivery inspire people to crawl out of the box and believe passionately in themselves, and achieve personal heights never dreamed possible. Joe talks about personal success in terms that he thoroughly understands, because he's been there and done that. He speaks of what he knows, sharing his own life experiences, and has a unique, often humorous way of dredging up those hidden demons we might be refusing to recognize.
MICHAEL HINGSON As was the case with many Americans, Michael Hingson's life changed dramatically on September 11th. He and his Guide Dog, "Roselle" were the lucky ones, however, in that they escaped the World Trade Center attack. As a WTC survivor and as a Guide Dog user, he was thrust into the international limelight. He has become a national speaker on the topic of trust and teamwork, something he doesn't believe is diminishing despite the parade of headlines about political, corporate and church scandals that have left people questioning their faith in institutions.
TEAM HOYT - Dick Hoyt and Rick Hoyt are a father-and-son team from Massachusetts who together have competed an impressive 224 Triathlons, 65 Marathons (including 25 Boston Marathons) and 6 Ironmans - in addition to numerous other competitions. They have also climbed mountains and once trekked 3,735 miles across America in just 45 days. It’s a remarkable record of exertion — all the more so when you consider that Rick can’t walk or talk. At Rick’s birth in 1962 the umbilical cord coiled around his neck and cut off oxygen to his brain. Dick and his wife, Judy, were told that there would be no hope for their child’s development. Undaunted, the couple brought their son home determined to raise him as “normally” as possible. After fighting local school bureaucracies for years, Rick was finally admitted into a public school in 1975. Two years later, Rick told his father (via a new computer program designed by Tufts University) that he wanted to participate in a five-mile benefit run for a local lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Dick, far from being a long-distance runner, agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair. They finished next to last but they felt they had achieved a triumph. That night, Dick remembers, “Rick told us he just didn’t feel handicapped when we were competing” and both of their lives were changed forever.
