About John Powers
John R. Powers has impressive credentials as a motivator, business person, novelist, playwright,
media
personality, and educator. He is co-founder and president of The Powers of Motivation
Institute, and he
regularly speaks before major corporations, national associations, and various educational and civic
organizations.
| His business experience includes raising over a million dollars to
produce, Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect
Up?, a
musical comedy that he wrote that is presently playing in over
forty cities throughout the United States. He has also written
and performed the one-man show, Scissors, Paper,
Rock.
Powers has been a guest
on literally thousands of radio and television shows
throughout the country. He has frequently appeared on
such shows as Oprah, Tom Snyder and
The Today Show. In addition, he wrote humorous
commentaries for NBC Television and hosted his own
television show
Powers Up. He has received two Emmy awards for his
television work.
Currently, Powers is
writing and performing one-minute spots for WYCC-TV in Chicago
on how to be a more effective public speaker. He is also hosting The John Powers Show,
a Chicago-based, PBS interview show that focuses on how famous
and not-so-famous personalities have dealt with challenges in
their lives. In addition, he is in the process of writing and
hosting six motivational television shows for WYCC.

Powers has written four successful books, The Last Catholic in America, Do Black Patent Leather
Shoes Really Reflect Up?, The Unoriginal Sinner & the Ice Cream God, and his most
recent, The Junk
Drawer, Corner Store, Front Porch Blues. His writings have appeared in numerous magazines, such as
Readers Digest, Chicago Magazine, and the Chicago Tribune
Magazine. He has also been the subject
of dozens of magazines and newspaper articles.
He makes over one hundred public speaking appearances annually. He has spoken to such
organizations as the Chicago Bulls, National Bank of Detroit, United States Post Office, and
American
Bar Association. His educational credentials include teaching on the elementary, junior
high, and
university levels. For many years, he was a professor of speech & performing arts at
Northeastern
Illinois University. Powers continues to teach by speaking to thousands of teachers
every year. He
holds a Ph.D. degree in communications from Northwestern University.
