About
Larry Csonka
Larry Csonka was the quintessential fullback of the outstanding
Miami Dolphin teams of the 1970's and of the National Football
League as a whole. He was the forward mover—the man who got
the ball when a first down or a touchdown was just a few tough
yards away. Csonka led the Dolphins to three consecutive Super
Bowl appearances in 1971-1973, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl
honors along the way. He and halfback Jim Kiick were
affectionately known as "Butch Cassidy and Sundance
Kid" and were mainstays in the Dolphins' perfect 17-0-0
season in 1972. After leaving to join the World Football League,
"Zonk" returned to the NFL to play for the New York
Giants and then the Dolphins again for his final pro season in
1979.
On Christmas Day in
1946, a nine-pound, thirteen-ounce baby boy was born to the
Csonka family of Stow, Ohio. By age 16, Csonka had grown to
six-foot three-inches tall and 237 pounds. An All-American
fullback at Syracuse, he was the Miami Dolphins' first round
draft choice in 1968 and was MVP of the 1968 College All- Star
Game. He met teammate Jim Kiick of Wyoming at that game and they
became immediate friends, thus earning their outlaw, movie title
nicknames. Csonka blossomed as a powerhouse back in 1970 when
Don Shula took over as head coach in Miami. That year, he gained
74 yards rushing, which he increased to over 1,000 yards in
1971, '72, and '73. From 1968 to 1974, he gained a total of
5,900 yards, scored 44 touchdowns, and earned the MVP title for
the Dolphins' Super Bowl VIII victory over the Minnesota
Vikings.
After a contract
dispute in 1974, Csonka, Kiick and teammate Paul Warfield signed
with the World Football League. When the WFL folded, Csonka
returned to the NFL and then to the Dolphins in 1979, leading
the team in rushing with 837 yards. That same year he was named
MVP by his Dolphin teammates. Csonka finished his career in
Miami with a total of 57 touchdowns, a Dolphin record.
Csonka and power
running are synonymous in the NFL. He roared through defensive
lines during his eleven-year football career, earning him a
Dolphin career rushing record, which still stands, of 6,736
yards. Add to that his rushing yards from his years with the New
York Giants (1976-78), and you get a career rushing total of
over 8,000 years, which places him among the Top Ten in all time
rushing.
Csonka's
importance to the game of football was exemplified when he was
elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1987. His inclusion in the
prestigious group came in only his second year of eligibility.
In 1973, he was named Super Athlete of the Year by the
Professional Football Writers Association.
A
former All-American at Syracuse, Csonka set numerous records
with the Orangemen and was selected for the East-West Game, the
Hula Bowl and the former All-Star NFL Game. He was selected MVP
in each of those games. While at Syracuse, Csonka broke the
rushing records of Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little and Jim
Nance.
After three
successful seasons co-hosting the popular syndicated program
American Gladiators, Csonka continues his television career as
host of ESPN's new outdoor adventure program, North To Alaska.
